The basic difference between ceramic and porcelain tile is in their production technology. Porcelain is the result of a more controlled manufacturing process than conventional ceramics, made through a mixture of porcelain clay and various minerals heated at over 1,200 degrees Celsius. As a result, the obtained ceramics are more uniform, denser, sterilized and resistant than normal ceramics.
Also, porcelains have less porosity in the structure and therefore have a very low water absorption index, which guarantees the longevity of porcelains. This feature makes porcelain suitable for high traffic places such as airports or shopping centers. Porcelain glazes have more color variety and offer a special appearance.
Conventional ceramics are composed of a mixture of clay and some minerals. Due to the slight differences, ceramics in turn can offer more interesting aesthetics.
The large number of holes on the glaze, the color difference between them, the irregularity of the edges, the slight protrusions, the difference in size, the convexity or the concaveness, and the printing defects cause the tile or ceramic grade to decrease from one to four.
This durability is highly dependent on installation. In order to increase the durability of the tile, the subfloor or the surface on which it is tiled must be smooth, resistant and without abnormalities. Depending on the dimensions of each tile, a suitable mortar and a certain thickness should be used.
Usually yes, but only if the sub-surface is properly installed and not broken or uneven. However, it is not generally the most convenient option, and although you will save money and time initially, you may incur higher costs later on. Keep in mind that installing tiles on top of tiles will make the hall smaller and cause problems near the doors.
